About Gurdial Singh

He lived in Jaito, in the Malwa region, and taught in schools and colleges nearby, and wrote about the people around him: labourers, carpenters, men tied by loyalty to families that would not keep them. Marhi Da Deeva, published in 1964, made his name. Addh Chanani Raat won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1975.

Where to start

Marhi Da Deeva first: it is short and hard and unsentimental. Anhoe is the natural second book. Parsa is later, longer and stranger, and is best kept until you trust the author.
