About Ram Saroop Ankhi
Ankhi came from Dhaula, a village near Barnala, and nearly everything he wrote is set within a day's walk of it. He wrote farmers, labourers and small landowners without romance and without contempt, which is why the people he wrote about read him.
Where to start
Kothe Kharak Singh is the book his name rests on, and it is long. If you want to try him first, Partapi is a single life rather than a whole village. The collected stories are the best value on the shelf for a reader who already knows they like him.
