Start Gurdial Singh with Marhi Da Deeva (1964), his short novel about a landless Malwa labourer named Jagseer. Read Anhoe and Adh Chanani Raat after it. He received the Jnanpith Award in 1999, India’s highest literary honour.

Gurdial Singh wrote about people who own nothing, in a district where owning land is the entire measure of a man. He taught school in Jaito for years before the novels made his name, and it shows — nothing in his writing is borrowed from books.

Read Marhi Da Deeva first

Jagseer is a labourer bound by loyalty to a Sardar family that has no reason to keep him once the old man dies. That is the whole plot, and it is enough. The novel is short, the sentences are plain, and the ending is not softened.

It was made into a film in 1989 and is now taught in most Punjabi literature courses. If you only ever read one Gurdial Singh novel, this is it.

Then Anhoe

Denser and slower, and worth the effort once you already trust him. The reader who bounced off Anhoe first almost always came back to it happily after Marhi Da Deeva.

Then Adh Chanani Raat and Parsa

Adh Chanani Raat — the half-moon night — takes the same Malwa material and pushes it further into the interior life of its characters. Parsa is the late novel, and the one critics argue about most.

Why the Jnanpith mattered

When Gurdial Singh received the Jnanpith Award in 1999, it was only the second time it had gone to a Punjabi writer — Amrita Pritam had received it in 1981. That award did more for the visibility of rural Punjabi fiction than any review ever had.
