How the shelf is arranged

Most readers come to Punjabi fiction through four writers. Nanak Singh wrote the reform novels of the 1930s and 1940s. Gurdial Singh and Ram Saroop Ankhi wrote the Malwa countryside without romance. Jaswant Singh Kanwal wrote village love stories that turn into political novels. Each has a page of their own, with every title of theirs we hold.

  • New to reading Punjabi: start with a short village novel such as Marhi Da Deeva or Pavittar Paapi.
  • Want history inside a story: Ik Mian Do Talwaran on the Ghadar movement, or Dhaawan Dilli De Kingre.
  • Want one long book: Kothe Kharak Singh follows a whole village across three generations.

10 Punjabi novels to start with — The order we hand them over at the counter.
