About Shiv Kumar Batalvi
He is called Birha da Sultan, the king of separation, and the name is accurate: nearly every poem is about longing or loss. He died at thirty-six. His poems have been sung by so many singers since that readers often know the lines before they know whose they are.
Where to start
Not with Loona. It is his greatest work and his hardest. Start with a collection of the short lyrics, then come to Loona once his vocabulary is familiar. If you already know you want everything, the collected poems cost less than buying the volumes one by one.
