How to start reading Punjabi when you only speak it

An adult who already speaks Punjabi can learn to read Gurmukhi in about four weeks: one week on the 35 base letters, one on the ten vowel signs, one reading signboards and headlines, and one on a short novel. Speaking fluency does most of the work.

The people who struggle are not the ones who do not know Punjabi. They are the ones who know it perfectly and have been told, for twenty years, that reading it is a separate skill they missed. It is not. If you speak the language you have already done the hard ninety per cent.

Week 1 — the 35 letters

Gurmukhi has 35 base characters, in a fixed order that begins ੳ ਅ ੲ ਸ ਹ. Learn them in that order, because every chart, dictionary and school book you will ever open uses it. Fifteen minutes a day, written by hand, not tapped on a phone. Handwriting is what makes the shapes stick.

Do not learn the names in isolation. Say a word you already know for each one as you write it.

Week 2 — the vowel signs (lagaan matra)

This is the part everybody skips and then blames themselves for. The ten vowel marks — kanna, sihari, bihari, aunkar, dulankar, lavan, dulavan, hora, kanaura, and the plain mukta with no mark at all — are the whole system. Once you can see them, the script stops being a wall and becomes spelling.

Add the three subscript letters and the bindi and tippi after. Not before.

Week 3 — read things that are already in your head

  • Shop boards and bus destination plates. You already know what they say, so you are decoding, not translating.
  • Newspaper headlines. Ajit and Jagbani print in large type and short sentences.
  • Song lyrics you can sing from memory. The words arrive before your eyes finish the line, which is exactly the confidence trick you need.
  • Nanakshahi calendar dates and gurdwara notices.

Week 4 — one short novel, out loud

Now take a village-set novel with everyday vocabulary. Marhi Da Deeva, Puranmashi, or anything by Ram Saroop Ankhi. Read aloud. Reading aloud lets your ear correct your eye, and your ear is already fluent.

Expect the first fifteen pages to be slow and the next hundred to be normal. That gear change happens to everyone.

The four mistakes that stall people

  1. Starting with poetry. Poetry compresses vocabulary and inverts word order. It is the last thing to read, not the first.
  2. Starting with religious text. Gurbani uses an older register and Braj-influenced vocabulary. Save it for after a few novels.
  3. Reading silently too early. Silent reading hides the fact that you already know the word.
  4. Switching books every few days. Stay with one author until the vocabulary starts repeating.
