Punjabi poetry: the shelf worth owning

Own four Punjabi poetry books: a collected Shiv Kumar Batalvi, Amrita Pritam’s poems, an edition of Waris Shah’s Heer, and a Pash collection. Read them in that order — modern lyric first, the eighteenth-century qissa last.

Poetry is where Punjabi is at its strongest and where new readers most often give up. The reason is order. People start with Heer because it is the most famous, hit two hundred and fifty years of vocabulary they have never met, and conclude they cannot read poetry.

Reverse it. Start with the poem you have already heard sung.

1. Shiv Kumar Batalvi, collected

The whole output fits in one volume because he died at thirty-six. Half of it you will recognise from music before you reach the end of the line. Then read Loona, his verse play, which is the serious work.

2. Amrita Pritam

Ajj Aakhaan Waris Shah Nu is the single most quoted modern Punjabi poem, and it is short. Sunehade won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1956. Her poetry is plainer on the surface than Shiv’s and harder underneath.

3. Pash

Avtar Singh Sandhu, who wrote as Pash, was killed in 1988 at thirty-seven. Sabh ton khatarnak — the most dangerous thing — is the poem everyone knows, about the death of a dream being worse than the death of a body. Direct, political, no ornament. Good for readers who find lyric poetry too soft.

4. Waris Shah — Heer, last

The 1766 qissa, and the foundation the rest of it stands on. Buy an edition with notes and read it slowly, ideally aloud, after the modern poets have built your vocabulary. Every Punjabi poet since has been answering this book.

And if you want the older ground

Bulleh Shah, Baba Farid, Sultan Bahu. Sufi kafis, short, repeatable, and closer to spoken Punjabi than Heer is. A reasonable substitute if a full qissa feels like too much.
